When a company suddenly fills the front pages, was there a sign first? We line up every spike in front-page coverage against hiring freezes, state layoff notices, SEC filings, Google search spikes and shifts in tone, and count how often each one came first, how early, and how often it came to nothing.
A signal counts when it came 1 to 60 days before a company's front-page spike. “Lift” compares how often a spike followed the signal with how often one followed an ordinary day at the same companies. We publish a pattern only once it covers 5+ events, came first at least 3 times, was followed by a story at least 1 time in 5 and has 2× lift or more, and we always show the times it fired with nothing following.
| Signal | Before | Came first | Median lead | Fired, nothing after | Lift |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Front-page tone turning negativefront pages | Any front-page spike | 31 of 166 | 34 days11–49 | 13 of 24 | 14.2× |
| Layoff notice filed with a state (WARN)WARN notices | Any front-page spike | 15 of 166 | 31 days15–40 | 20 of 30 | 10.3× |
When a company's recent signals match a pattern above, we issue a warning that day, then check the front pages for 60 days. It's confirmed if the matching story breaks, and expires if it doesn't. Every call stays on the record.
35 open warnings. Premium shows which companies, the signals behind each call, and alerts you when a company you watch gets one.

Headline events. Twice a day we read the front pages of 100+ news sites and match each headline to the companies it names. An event is a day when a company's mentions jump at least two standard deviations above its own previous four weeks, with at least 3 headlines. Spike days within a week count as one story. The words in the headlines decide the kind: layoffs, leadership, legal, earnings, recall or outage, deal, or launch.
Signals. New job postings falling by half against the month before; one team's open roles dropping 40% or more; a wave of postings taken down; a WARN notice filed with a state; 8-K items such as officer changes, restructuring costs, impairments or cybersecurity incidents; late filing notices; activist stakes; a burst of insider trade filings; a trending Google search; and front-page tone turning negative while coverage is still ordinary.
What this isn't. A signal that came before a story didn't cause it, and plenty of stories arrive with no warning at all. Patterns are measured on the same history they describe, which is why the live track record above matters most. It isn't investment advice.
